General Information

JUDAISM AT BB CAMP 

BB Camp has a proud and long-standing tradition as a Jewish camp dating back to its beginning in 1954. Through programming, ritual, and community involvement, campers learn about their rich and storied heritage.  BB Camp is a pluralistic camp.

PRAYERS

Daily, the Camp offers a morning service following breakfast.  The service combines Hebrew and English and is led by both campers and staff. Male staff and campers are asked to wear a kippot (head covering) when attending services.

We begin every meal at BB Camp with a musical prayer (Hamotzi) that combines Hebrew and English and at the end of each meal, a prayer of thanks (Birkhat Hamazon) is recited.

BAT-MITZVAH AND BAR-MITZVAH LESSONS

For girls and boys preparing for their Bat Mitzvahs and Bar Mitzvahs, we will coordinate one-on-one tutoring during the summer so that campers have a chance to practice their Torah and Haftorah portions.

SHABBAT

We mark each Friday night with a camp-wide Shabbat service. Campers enter the dining hall quietly in clean white shirts to sit down to a traditional Shabbat meal. The service begins with prayers over bread and candles, and “wine”.  A short themed presentation by a section of campers or staff is incorporated into the service.   After dinner, we host a traditional camp singsong in the dining hall. Following the singsong in the dining hall, campers gather in the amphitheatre for a fun, educational program that is tied to the Shabbat theme.

VISITS TO STAFF AT CAMP

You may bring visitors into Camp only at the start of your day off and the office must be notified in advance. You can then take them on a short tour of Camp.

EMPLOYMENT EQUITY

HEALTH CENTRE

The Camp Health Center is supported by nurses  or medics on duty at all times. If you are ill, you would be brought into the Health Centre and may even have to remain for a day or two. If it is necessary for you to remain for a third day, it is a general practice to omit taking your “day off” during that particular week, since an undue burden would be placed on fellow staff. The Health Centre will provide normal medications for sickness, emergency, etc., with the exception of prescription drugs. If you take a certain medication on a regular basis, you are responsible for maintaining your own supply.  If you need to be seen by a physician, the Camp will take you to the ER at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.  Any medication prescribed is at the staff member’s expense.

E-MAIL AND INTERNET ACCESS

Our office is equipped with a computer for staff to use to check their e-mail or use the internet. This computer is accessible during rest hour and after 9pm at night.   The Camp's wifi is limited to designated locations and is password protected.  It may not be shared with campers or LTP'ers at any time and stuff are not permitted to use their phones or laptops in front of campers.

LAUNDRY

Staff can use the laundry room at Camp.  Staff are required to provide their own detergent and must be responsible for removing wet and dry clothes from the washer and dryer.  The Camp is not responsible for any clothes damaged from the use of the equipment.

SALARY

Salary is payable twice a month (typically the 15th and last day of the month).  Payments are automatically deposited into the staff member’s account.   At the discretion of the Camp, one salary advance may be allowed part-way throughout the summer.

Any mandatory deductions due to Canadian Government Regulations, where applicable, will be deducted from your total salary.

In the event that a staff member is prevented from performing her/his daily duties, for any reason whatsoever (including accident and illness), it is understood that the Staff Person is paid only for each full day’s performance of duties.  Staff will be permitted two sick days during the summer months.  Sick days cannot be carried over from one summer to the next.

DISMISSAL

The Director reserves the right to terminate the employment of any staff member at any time if, in her opinion, it is in the best interest of the Camp and/or campers. Full details on this will be incorporated in the employment agreement which will be signed by each staff member hired by BB Camp.
