We’re A Great Team!
Our staff at the very heart of what we do at Camp: helping to support, care for, and nurture our campers and develop a program that is top-notch. Every summer a passionate, gifted and amazing staff is hired to make Camp awesome.
The majority of the staff are graduates of BB Camp and love coming to Camp as much as the campers. Our junior counselors are a minimum of 17 years of age and grade 11 graduates while senior counselors are grade 12 graduates or first year University students.
Our wilderness and resource staff are university age students and many of our senior team are pursuing or completing a University degree in liberal arts, business, social work, education or recreation.
Staff members undergo training prior to the first session of each summer which includes:
- First-Aid and CPR
- Abuse Prevention and Child Protection
- Behaviour Management
- Technical Wilderness Skills
- Programming Skills
- Review of all Camp’s Protocols and procedures
Our committed and caring leaders provide positive, wholesome experiences in which the accomplishments of each child are valued. All counseling staff have current certification in Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid/CPR C, while our wilderness staff possess Wilderness First Aid certification. We also ensure that our staff has the necessary qualifications to run programs in the safest manner possible.
In addition to ongoing training throughout the year, each BB Camp staff member participates in an intensive staff training program prior to the start of Summer Camp.
BB Camp has high expectations of every staff member, and those are reflected in the Camp’s hiring policies. Potential staff members, including those previously employed at BB Camp, submit an application each year to join the staff team. Each person has an interview and must successfully complete a police check. In addition to maintaining current swimming certification and first aid qualifications, staff are expected to have qualifications in a variety of program areas. This allows BB Camp to ensure that staff will provide an exceptional camp experience for each camper.
The campers are at the very centre of everything at BB Camp. Our staff ensures the safety and well-being of our campers. The Camp’s excellent staff to camper ratio (1:5 on average, 1:3 in water-based activities) means that your son or daughter benefits from consistent individual attention on a daily basis. This allows for greater opportunities for camper success in both BB Camp’s instructional programs and daily recreational activities.
We also have counselors sleeping in the cabins with our campers to ensure any middle of the night emergencies can be dealt with quickly and effectively. Counselors are selected and placed in cabins with their skill level with particular age groups kept in mind. We place our counselors with age groups they have the most experience with ensuring they have the skills necessary to work with that particular age group.
Our counsellors travel and participate with the campers throughout the entire day and provide continuity. Activity leaders work at particular specialties throughout the day and provide additional supervision for our campers at meals, special programs and at nighttime.
Each year, over 85% of staff members return to BB Camp. This means that our staff are familiar with and support the Camp’s philosophy, understand our expectations, and are committed to providing the best experience for each BB Camp camper.
